When constructing a building, architects and builders have a comprehensive set of guidelines to follow – such as the Fire Code - which mandate and guide the design and construction of virtually all aspects of a facility. The effectiveness of this cannot be questioned, as it is rare for people to be injured or killed in a fire nowadays.
Yet there is still no “Code” for people to follow with regards to security.
Nor is there a “standard” by which security consultants are held to, or a “model” defined as best practice - even though there is no shortage of cottage industry security firms and trainers, all purporting to have the “solution”.
This lack of consistency and vetted guidance creates the potential for significant confusion. Additionally, in many organizations, safety recommendations are often made by people who don’t have the experience or expertise to make such decisions.
While security for organizations and high profile individuals may be multifaceted and complex, the solutions are fundamental, and can be defined and organized into a simple, 4-step process.
